Group of Wisconsin Papers to Give Away Advertising

By: E&P Staff A group of newspapers in central Wisconsin is giving away a quarter of a million dollars worth of advertising space.

The Gannett-owned papers are running a program called "Thrive" to help local businesses get through the recession.

Michael Beck, general manager and executive editor of the Wausau (Wis.) Daily Herald, one of the papers participating in Thrive, wrote in a column, ?Our position as the leading information provider puts us in a unique place -- and gives us the responsibility -- to help turn things around, and that?s what we?re trying to do.?

Effective today through mid-October, if a current advertiser increases the media buy by 25%, the paper will double the entire run for free. A similar program exists for new advertisers.

The paper plans to promote the program and update how much money is given away.

"We're all in this together," Beck added in the column. "And we've asked all of our employees to help share this unique community-driven program, so don't be surprised if they bring it up with you."
