By: Jim Rosenberg Memphis Newspaper Guild President Daniel Connolly notified members today that tomorrow's planned vote on ratification of the contract with the Commercial Appeal will be rescheduled. "We need more time to review the contract language. We had multiple negotiators working on it over the years, and we need to review carefully what we agreed to," Connolly wrote. The agreement with the E.W. Scripps daily would give employees their first raises in seven years but permit the newspaper to outsource any work and lay off employees without limitation. According to the Guild, it also includes a permanent pension freeze. The contract would retain the evergreen clause that keeps contract terms in effect when bargaining continues after the contract's expiration. A vote either way would have "serious consequences," the Guild had told members. "On balance, the package is unfavorable to workers." Connolly had said at the time the deal was struck.
