By: E&P Staff The first components of a new press have been delivered to Progress Press in Mriehel, Malta, where in several months a new plant will be able to offer work that now must be handled by printers off the island. Investment in plant and equipment comes to 26 million euros, according to the Times of Malta, in Valletta.

The UV-equipped press will consist of eight 40,000-copy-per-hour G-145 Printline towers and two folders from Global Web Systems, Villa Park, Ill. Able to produce 64 pages, the press means faster printing of more pages for quicker deliveries, according to Progress Press Chief Operations Manager Noel Galea.

Capable of printing on paper stock superior to conventional newsprint, the G-145 also will be able to print magazines that now must be produced in Italy. Stitching and trimming systems also will be installed.

The Times reports that the press will be installed in a building originally designed for a supermarket but since modified to accommodate not only the towers? height, but also the required press foundation, where a layer of expanded polystyrene isolates the machine from external vibrations.
