Star Tribune in Minneapolis, Minn., from his post as executive editor at McClatchy's
News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.
Gyllenhaal, who joined
The News & Observer as metro editor in 1991, is replacing Tim McGuire, who is retiring.
Melanie Sill, managing editor of
The News & Observer, will succeed Gyllenhaal as executive editor in Raleigh. Sill was project editor for "Boss Hog," the investigative report that exposed the environmental hazards created by North Carolina's powerful hog industry and won the 1996 Pulitzer for Public Service.
