When the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin merge early in June, about half the Advertiser staff will lose their jobs and a third of Star-Bulletin employees will be gone, the Star-Bulletin reported Thursday.
The story by Allison Schaefers quoted the president of Oahu Publications, which is combining the two papers into the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, as saying the new paper will employ between 450 and 500 worker. “It will be a pretty good mix of workers form both papers,” Dennis Francis said.
About two-thirds of the Star-Bulletin’s 300 employees will be retained, and about half of the 580 Advertiser employees, he added.
Oahu Publications Inc., which is consolidating the state's two largest daily newspapers into the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, expects to employ between 450 and 500 workers once the papers are combined next month.
All Star-Bulletin newsroom employees represented by the Hawaii Newspaper Guild will keep their jobs under terms of their contract, and Francis said that 10 former union newsroom employees laid off last year will be called back.
The Star-Advertiser is expected to debut June 7, the Star-Bulletin reported.
