By: E&P Staff Transcontinental said that it stopped publication of Canadian newspaper The Daily News of Halifax and instead plans to launch a free daily paper in partnership with Metro International and Torstar Corp. Metro Halifax will debut on Feb. 14.
Transcontinental is extending severance to 92 employees at the Daily News.
In a statement about the move, Transcontinental's Senior Vice President Marc-No?l Ouellette said the paper was struggling.
"We worked hard to deliver an economically viable newspaper in the Halifax market with the Daily News," he said. "It was an extremely tough business decision which does not affect Transcontinental's Halifax area distribution network, its four locally published weekly newspapers or the real estate guide Transaction."
Metro Halifax will be printed at Transcontinental's Ragged Lake printing facility.
Transcontinental bought the Daily News tab in 2002 with a circulation of 20,000.
