Happy Trails! E&P's 'Trail Mix' Author Rides Off Into the Sunset, Picking Her Favorite Campaign Blogs

By: Kathryn Blaze Carlson Alas, with summer coming to an end -- and please forgive me for saying those dreaded words -- it's the end of the road for me at Trail Mix. But before I go, I figured I'd offer my two cents (actually, it's free -- put your pennies away) on what it's been like surfing newspaper blogs the past few months for the juicy 411 on Election 2008.

Many would argue that this year marks the first truly Internet-riddled election, with the advent of YouTube taking viral messaging to a whole new level. However, in case you haven't already noticed, mainstream newspapers aren't taking the Battle of the Blogs lying down. Indeed, the country's leading papers have done their utmost to amp up coverage, dust off the print pages, and emerge as strong go-to voices online.

Enter blogs such as the L.A. Times' "Top of the Ticket," USA Today's "On Politics," The Boston Globe's "Political Intelligence," The New York Times' "The Caucus," The Washington Post's "The Trail" and "The Fix," the Chicago Tribune's "The Swamp," The Wall Street Journal's "The Washington Wire," and (among others) The Denver Post's "Politics West" -- all of which were frequented by yours truly for Trail Mix?s daily goodies.

With Trail Mix officially off the cybersphere, perhaps you only have time to check out a couple newspaper blogs each morning. If I were you, I'd spend my precious time primarily reading Andrew Malcolm and Don Frederick at the "Top of the Ticket," Mark Memmott at s "On Politics," and Mark Silva at The Swamp -- all of which serve up frequent updates, quirky news, solid writing, and a good dose of attitude.

All the best as you point-and-click your way through this year's historic election. Cheers!
