To outsiders, New Haven, Conn., is a college town, home to the venerated Yale University. But to Paul Bass, editor of the New Haven Independent and a 30-year veteran local reporter, it’s an underserved media niche deserving of more shoe leather journalists than legacy media newsroom cuts have left it with over the past decade.
Bass launched the Independent through the Online Journalism Project, a 501C(3) that he started to build news websites in local markets on an NPR-model featuring quality, non-partisan and donor-funded reporting. When he isn’t acting as a fiscal agent and trainer for upstart sites in the region like VtDigger.org or sister sites (the Valley Independent Sentinel, the Connecticut Health I-Team), he’s leading the Independent down ever-expanding pathways toward user interaction.
