Harlan Simon Installs Controls on Goss Press in Saskatoon

Posted
By: E&P Staff Harland Simon, Oak Brook, Ill., ended 2007 with a contract to install its PressNet controls on the Goss Universal 70 press at The StarPhoenix, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Planned for completion in July, the project includes replacing main press controls, upgrading two Prima consoles, replacing the Allen Bradley MPU, and a clutch drive conversion. The StarPhoenix also will receive a comprehensive suite of management system modules, including direct ink presetting.

The existing system will remain operational until the new system is tested and commissioned, ensuring uninterrupted production and holding down costs.

"We anticipate that the upgrades will allow us a significant saving in our press operation and a boost in quality," Prepress Production Manager Murray Hill said in a statement.

The upgrade was made to replace obsolete hardware, improve technical support and enhance features such as comprehensive monitoring, reporting and ink presetting with adapted algorithms, according to Harland Simon.
