Harland Simon Upgrades 'Cape Cod Times' Press Controls

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Cape Cod (Mass.) Times chose Harland Simon to replace the press control systems on its Goss Metro press this fall, with full production expected by the end of the year and no disruption to the paper's production schedule.

The project includes replacement of main press controls, circumferential and sidelay motorization of four units, installation of six new operator consoles with automatic online soft proofing and supply of a comprehensive suite of management-system modules, including direct ink presetting, auto-impositioning and color advisory systems.

The project will replace old quality and folder controls with Prima 6000 control consoles and the PressNet system, replace all proprietary communications with an Ethernet/IP network connecting dual (includes back-up) Press Master PLCs and remote I/Os at the units, reelstands, compensators and drives with serial interfaces controlling new CGI digital inkers, Ryco/Technotrans dampeners and original Goss spiral brush dampeners.

At all times, the existing system will remain operational until the new system is fully tested and commissioned, according to Harland Simon, which says the method also holds down costs.

Times Operation's Director Mike Fabia said he followed the progress of a similar project early last year at another Dow Jones Local Media Group daily, the Times Herald-Record, Middletown, N.Y., where he was able to get feedback from Production Director Fred Stanton "and actually view the system in a true production environment."
