By: E&P Staff Harland Simon has signed a contract to upgrade the press controls at The Forum, Fargo, N.D., early next year, with completion expected in May.
The job will be the first for Harland Simon on a manroland Mediaman press and includes replacing Mavo ink and dampener controls, as well as main DC drives, on-unit ink PCBs, register controls and ink drives with industry-standard, off-the-shelf solutions -- all controlled from two Prima 6000 desks. Also, Harland Simon's Prima MS and RIPSet will be scheduling, ink presetting, monitoring and reporting all production activity.
To avoid production disruption and keep costs down, the existing system will remain operational until the new system is fully tested and commissioned.
In selecting Harland Simon for the project, Forum Communications Printing Operations Director Harold Schmunk cited the supplier's range of features and operator-friendly controls, as well as ink savings, less newsprint waste at the folder, fast color registration and efficient makeready. "Information on ink settings and press setups for individual press runs can be saved and retrieved for use at a later date," he added in a statement.
