Posted
By: E&P Staff Britain's Broughton Printers and Westferry Printers ordered press-control upgrades from Harland Simon, Milton Keynes, England, and Oak Brook, Ill.

At Broughton Printers, in Preston, Prima management system hardware and application software will be upgraded to the latest specification, and controls on one of four Goss press lines will be upgraded to the latest PressNet specification, including new Prima 6000 desks and additional operator stations with touch-screen monitors in the quiet room.

Folder PLCs on the same four presses will be replaced with the latest processors, the eight Goss CT45 reelstands' original electronics will be replaced with industry-standard parts, and the belt drive will be upgraded to a thyristor-controlled regulator.

Upgrade benefits include replacement of old hardware, faster press-communication speed, lower splice and core waste and improved reporting and diagnostics, according to Harland Simon.

At Westferry Printers is continuing a press-control upgrade begun lat year, with Harland Simon providing ink drop-in modules on the control desks, as well as upgrades to more reelstand controls.

According to Harland Simon, the old operator interface ink modules have become unreliable and difficult to repair after many years of service. After replacing three last year with the latest technology used on the Prima 6000 desk, Harland Simon will provide two more.

At the same time, Harland Simon will work on three more reelstands, taking the total upgrades to seven after last year's work.
