The Hearst Corp. is seeking almost $150,000 from the weekly San Francisco
Independent to cover costs incurred during a legal fight over a contract
to publish San Francisco's legal notices, reported The Examiner .
Pan Asia Venture Capital Corp., owner of the Independent , sued Hearst in
1994, claiming the Hearst-owned Examiner engaged in unfair business
practices by bidding below cost on the city contract.
A jury in 1996 awarded $1.15 million, with a judge awarding more than $2.3
million in attorney fees to Pan Asia. But in August a California Court of
Appeal reversed the decision, wiping out the verdict and sending the case
back for retrial.
Hearst Corp. lawyers filed a memorandum in Superior Court Feb. 1 asking for
$146,450.33 to cover their costs during the appeal.
