Hearst Tower Is First Building in NYC to Achieve 'Green' Status

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Hearst Tower in Midtown Manhattan, headquarters of the Hearst Corporation, is the first office building in New York City to achieve ?green? status from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

The status is a mark of high environmental performance for interior and exterior design and operations, and reflects the designers' environmental consciousness in its building. Designers chose a special ?low-E? coated glass that allows for maximum light exposure while reflecting solar radiation that would otherwise heat up the building. Internally, the office building has such features as motion sensor lights at work stations in order to keep down the use of energy.

The Tower?s architectural design itself is environmentally conscious. When the site's previous building was torn down to build the Tower, 90 percent of the existing steel was recycled and used in the new structure. While creating a unique look the four triangles on the facade were also very structurally efficient, requiring approximately 20 percent less steel than a normal office building.

The Hearst Corporation publishes 12 daily newspapers, including the Houston Chronicle and San Francisco Chronicle.
