By: E&P Staff Heartland Publications LLC has bought the Richmond County Daily Journal in Rockingham, North Carolina and two weekly newspapers from Community Newspapers Inc. of Athens, Georgia.
Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The Daily Journal has circulation of 8,011. The weeklies included in the sale are the 6,350-circulation Cheraw (S.C.) Chronicle, and the 4,948-circulation Wadesboro (N.C.) Anson Record.
Santa Fe, N.M.-based Dirks, Van Essen & Murray Community Newspapers in the transaction.
Heartland President Michael Bush said "Rockingham is in an area of the country we know well and in which we have already established ourselves with several newspapers.? Heartland plans on growing the company through a program of strategic acquisitions, he added.
Old Saybrook, Conn.-based Heartland publishes 26 paid daily and weekly newspapers in North Carolina, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Ohio and West Virginia. The company's owners are The Wicks Group of Companies, a New York-based private equity firm, and Wachovia Capital Partners of Charlotte, N.C., the principal investing arm of Wachovia Corp.
