Heartland Buys W. Va. Papers

Posted
By: E&P Staff Heartland Publications acquired the Williamson (W. Va.) Daily News along with two weeklies from Mid-South Management Co. Terms of the deal, which was brokered by Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, were not disclosed.

Andrew Babb, Mid-South's president, said the sale of the papers is the result of a new strategic direction -- the company plans to concentrate on properties in Southeast. Mid-South along with its affiliate, Crescent Media Group, publishes 19 newspapers (and a magazine) in Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama. It has owned the Williamson since 1963 and The Gilbert Times and The Independent Herald of Pineville since 2000.

?We are very excited by having the Williamson Daily News join our family of community newspapers,? said Michael Bush, Heartland's president, in a statement. ?Mid-South has been a wonderful steward of this newspaper, and we will be proud to continue the traditions of fine newspapering that they have established.?
