By: Staff Reports Conference Board Releases Monthly Findings
The amount of help-wanted advertising run in newspapers decreased in February compared to
the prior month, the Conference Board reported yesterday. The Help-Wanted Advertising
Index dropped one point in February to 88. A year ago, it was 93.
The Conference Board conducts a monthly survey of help-wanted advertising volume in 51
major newspapers across the country.
In the last three months, five regions rose in help-wanted advertising while four regions
declined. Regions with the largest increases were West North Central (14%), West South Central
(9.1%), Mountain (6.5%), and East North Central (6.2%). The biggest declines occurred in New
England (-12.7%) and East South Central (-7.6%).
'Job growth continues to be so strong that it's a wonder there are any job applicants left for
the vacancies opening up,' says Ken Goldstein, economist at the Conference Board. 'Job activity
continues to be strong on both the Internet and in newspapers across the country.'
