Help-Wanted Index Down 34% in April

By: E&P Staff The Conference Board reported on Thursday that its Help-Wanted Advertising Index was flat in April at 19 compared to March. Year-over-year the index fell 34%.

All nine regions measured by the organization experienced declines. The worst occurred in the New England (down 26.8%), South Atlantic (down 20.5%), and Pacific (down 19.8) regions.

"The economy is still weak and job losses will likely continue through the summer at a slow pace," Ken Goldstein, labor economist at the Conference Board, said in a statement. "While it won't get much worse, it will be a while before things get better. The prolonged period of slow economic growth is feeding a sense of frustration. This is why consumer confidence is at a 16-year low."

The Conference Board surveys help-wanted print advertising volume in 51 major newspapers across the country every month.
