Help-Wanted Index Up 3 Points

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Conference Board announced today that its Help-Wanted Advertising Index -- a monthly survey of employment-advertising volume in 51 major U.S. newspapers -- jumped three points in January, to 41. It stood at 38 during the same period last year.

Recruitment advertising increased in eight of the nine regions the organization measures. The largest increases occurred in the Mountain region, up 22.6%, West South Central region, up 14.4%, and South Atlantic region, up 12.8%.

"The concern voiced by consumers is whether the pace of job growth will turn out to have been 'as good as it gets,'" Ken Goldstein, an economist with the Conference Board, said in a statement. "If new jobs continue to open up, consumer expectations could turn even more positive this spring, and that could cause more people who are not working to start looking for jobs."
