Herblock Prize News Includes Increase in Cash Award from $10,000 to $15,000

By: Dave Astor The Herb Block Foundation is raising the cash award for its annual Herblock Prize for editorial cartooning from $10,000 to $15,000 after taxes.

It's a rare bit of good news for the profession as the number of staff editorial cartoonists shrinks at an accelerated rate this year.

The foundation also announced that judges for the 2009 contest will include Garry Trudeau, Jules Feiffer, and 2008 Herblock Prize winner John Sherffius. The prize is presented each spring.

Other winners of the 2003-launched award -- named after Washington Post cartooning legend Herblock (1909-2001) -- were Matt Davies, Tony Auth, Jeff Danziger, and Jim Morin.

Finally, the foundation has increased the maximum number of cartoons that can be submitted from 10 to 20. Each entry must include at least 10 cartoons. The deadline for the 2009 contest is Feb. 1.

The foundation's Web site can be seen here.
