By: E&P Staff Gannett Co. has appointed William "Skip" Hidlay president and publisher of two New Jersey papers, the Courier News in Bridgewater and the Home News Tribune in East Brunswick. He has served as acting publisher since March.

Previously, Hidlay was executive editor and vice president of news of the Asbury Park (N.J.) Press. He was named to that position in 2002.

"Skip's energy and enthusiasm, combined with his 28 years of award-winning journalism experience, make him an excellent fit for these two Gannett newspapers," Robert Dickey, president of Gannett's newspaper division, said in a statement. "He is a leader, with a commitment to the region and an understanding of both readers and advertisers. We are pleased to make this appointment permanent."

Hidlay has worked in the newsrooms of the Press-Enterprise in Bloomsburg, Pa., the Courier-Post, in Cherry Hill, N.J., and the Associated Press, among other papers.

He succeeds Ketan Gandhi, who left the position in March.
