By: Mark Fitzgerald He's not running for elective office, but Alberto Gonzales picked up the endorsement of the biggest Hispanic publishers association Friday.

In a statement released from Washington, the National Association of Hispanic Publishers (NAHP) "declared its support" for the nomination of Gonzales to become U.S. Attorney General. President Bush has nominated Gonzales, who would be the first Hispanic to hold the post, to replace John Ashcroft.

"There is no one more qualified to fill the post of U.S. Attorney General than Judge Alberto Gonzales. With the strong leadership that he has demonstrated throughout his many years of legal public service, he has become a role model for the Latino community and a beacon of hope for the future of the country. The NAHP, Inc. is proud to endorse such a fine candidate," NAHP President Hernan Guaracao said in the statement.

NAHP says its 200-plus member and affiliate publications have a combined circulation of more than 10 million. Its member publications reach more than 50 percent of Hispanic households in 55 U.S. markets, the association says.
