By: E&P Staff The historic Freeman's Journal in Cooperstown, N.Y., -- a 198-year-old paper founded by James Fennimore Cooper's father - is changing hands.
J. Michael Moffat and Elinor Vincent sold the weekly to James and Mary Joan Kevlin of Norwich, Conn.
"We're thrilled to take on the responsibility for ensuring an important community institution continues to thrive," Jim Kevlin said in a statement.
Judge William Cooper founded the 2,000-circulation newspaper in 1808 as The Impartial Observer. The Village of Cooperstown was established the year before.
Kevlin, 54, will serve as editor and publisher of the Freeman's Journal. Most recently he was executive editor at the Gannett-owned Norwich Bulletin. He has served as president of the Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors and of the Associated Press Managing Editors.
M.J. Kevlin, 48, is a historic preservation planner. She will serve as co-chairman of the Iron String Press. She was executive director of the Pennsylvania Downtown Center and recently taught at Cornell's Department of City and Regional Planning.
Terms of the deal, brokered by W.B. Grimes & Co., were not disclosed.
