By: Jay DeFoore Adrian Holovaty?s Web site ChicagoCrime.org, which allows users to map the city?s crime by neighborhood, has won the $10,000 Grand Prize in the Batten Awards for Innovations in Journalism.

Holovaty, who recently left the Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World to take a job with WashingtonPost.com, created the site with Wilson Miner?s design input. The site, which is a free public service, utilizes Google?s online mapping technology.

"It is one journalist's ability to see all the pieces and put them together," the Batten judges said, "but every city should provide this as a public service."
The Batten Awards spotlight the creative use of new information ideas and technologies to involve citizens in public issues. They are administered by J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism at the University of Maryland and are funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
