Homer Davenport Festival Remembers the Renowned Editorial Cartoonist

Posted
By: E&P Staff The annual Homer Davenport Days festival will take place this weekend in Silverton, Ore.

Davenport (1867-1912) was the famous editorial cartoonist born and raised in the Silverton area. He later moved to San Francisco (to become a newspaper artist for William Randolph Hearst's syndicate) and New York.

Also, Davenport's interest in Arabian horses took him to what's now Syria. Many Arabian horses in the U.S. are descended from the 27 the cartoonist was given in 1906 by Bedouin leaders he befriended, according to DavenportDays.com.

The festival, which began in 1980, runs from Aug. 1-3 this year. It includes a cartoon contest, a parade, races, entertainment, an arts and crafts fair, and more.
