By: Joel Davis Paper Also Launches Morning Edition
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin says its circulation is up
about 4% despite distribution problems since its March 15
rollout. New owner David Black has added a morning edition to
complement the existing p.m. paper.
The Star-Bulletin, independently published for the first
time since 1968, has had distribution problems caused by carrier
shortages, customer service snafus, and a new printing press from
Australia whose arrival in Hawaii was delayed by customs and had
"teething" problems on the first printing day.
"Despite problems we estimate a 4% increase in subscriptions
since the change-over," Star-Bulletin spokeswoman Barbra
Pleadwell told E&P Online, adding that "advertising is going very
well."
The competing Honolulu Advertiser's circulation is
106,590; while the Star-Bulletin's circulation is 59,748.
Black wants a circulation of 100,000, hoping to achieve it by
boosting single-copy sales by about 40,000. The Gannett-owned
Advertiser has also added an evening edition that it is
delivering free.
