Hope for Jill? More Hostage Rescue Operations May Follow

By: A U.S. military spokesman says a raid to free three Christian peace activists in Iraq may lead to other hostage rescue "operations." Major General Rick Lynch says the operations will "probably" be a result of what investigators are learning now.

When asked about freelance journalist Jill Carroll, Lynch says he has no information he can discuss. Except for videotapes delivered to Arab TV outlets, Carroll hasn't been seen since she was kidnapped in Baghdad in January.

U.S. and British troops found the Canadian and British hostages bound together in a house in western Baghdad. Lynch says no kidnappers were around.

The members of the Chicago-based Christian Peacemaker Teams were abducted last year along with an American colleague. The body of Tom Fox was found earlier this month.

How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
