By: Joe Strupp Investigative Reporters and Editors has formally named Mark Horvit, projects editor of the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram, its new executive director. Horvit's appointment, which was contingent upon his joining the faculty of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, was finalized after the school appointed him as an associate professor, IRE stated in a release.

He will begin his new post Jan. 2, 2008.

?An accomplished investigative reporter and editor, Mark is passionate about IRE and watchdog journalism,? IRE President James V. Grimaldi, a reporter at The Washington Post, said in a statement. ?He is a facile, enthusiastic and energetic investigative journalist whose creative spirit is just the spark IRE needs right now."

"Horvit will take the helm of a vigorous nonprofit organization with 12 full-time staff members and a $1.4 million budget," IRE officials said in their announcement. "He will oversee IRE's renowned professional programs, contest, conferences, Web site and publications, including the award-winning IRE Journal. He also will manage the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting, a joint program of IRE and the Missouri School of Journalism."

Horvit is appointed to the associate professorship at the University of Missouri School of Journalism as part of an agreement with IRE, which is based at the university. IRE notified members in October of the intent to hire Horvit.

Horvit replaces Brant Houston who became the Knight Chair for Investigative and Enterprise Reporting at the University of Illinois in August. Houston remains acting executive director in the interim until Horvit begins his duties in January.

Among other responsibilities, Horvit will be in charge of fund-raising and IRE's $3 million endowment fund, which is in the last stages of a matching grant program with the Knight Foundation.

Horvit, 43, is married to Beverly Horvit, a former reporter who currently teaches journalism at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Beverly Horvit also will teach at the Missouri Journalism School in the fall of 2008.
