'Houston Chronicle' Drops Online Registration

Posted
By: E&P Staff In a note to readers explaining its latest Web site redesign, the Houston Chronicle today revealed that it is no longer requiring users to register to access the majority of content at Chron.com.

"In response to passionate pleas from many readers, we no longer require you to register to read stories or access most of the site's content," the note said. "Registration is only necessary in specialized areas - to post comments in our forums, access our newspaper archives, get breaking news alerts or build your own comics page."

The note said the newspaper conducted extensive surveys to determine what readers wanted out of the redesign, and added that the process is ongoing.

"As with the redesign of the newspaper more than a year ago, the goal was to make Chron.com easier to read and navigate and more visually appealing," the letter said.
