By: E&P Staff Tony Freemantle has been named metro editor of the Houston Chronicle.
Freemantle, 53, most recently was the Chronicle?s writing coach. He joined the newspaper in 1982 and has served in various capacities including general assignment reporter, environmental writer, national correspondent, special projects reporter, and assistant city editor. He has served as interim metro editor since August.
A native of South Africa, Freemantle won the 1997 Amnesty International Media Spotlight Award for a project titled ?Crying for Justice,? which spotlighted attempts to obtain justice for crimes committed against humanity in the past 50 years. The series also earned him a Pulitzer finalist nod.
In addition, Freemantle won the Texas Institute of Letters? Stanley Walker Award for newspaper writing in 2006 and 2007.
