By: Howell Raines, the deposed former editor of The New York Times who has written books and articles since his 2003 demise in the wake of the Jayson Blair controvesy, will return to regular writing this year as, what else, a media critic, concentrating on the 2008 political campaigns. Will he review his old paper?
Raines, 64, who is also working on a Civil War novel, will write a monthly column for Portfolio, the glossy business magazine, Howard Kurtz revealed in the Washington Post today.
"The Wire," in its second HBO episode Sunday night, introduced a newsroom story line that inevitably seems to be leading to a Jayson Blair-type scandal.
