By: E&P Staff Thomas Edsall, who covered national politics at The Washington Post for 25 years, is joining The Huffington Post news site/group blog as political editor. He'll oversee HP's 2008 election and political coverage, as well as write for the site.

"As we expand our coverage of national politics and the upcoming elections, Tom will bring his reporting experience, political acumen, and vision to our daily political coverage," HP Editor-in-Chief Arianna Huffington stated in a press release posted this afternoon on the Romenesko media-news blog.

Edsall is a professor at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, where he holds the Joseph Pulitzer II and Edith Pulitzer Moore Chair. He has also been a correspondent for The New Republic and a contributing editor at National Journal. Last year, Edsall was a guest op-ed columnist for The New York Times.

In addition, he has written for such magazines as The Atlantic, The New York Review of Books, Harper's, The American Prospect, The Nation, and The Washington Monthly. And Edsall is the author of "Building Red America: The New Conservative Coalition and the Drive for Permanent Powe" and "Chain Reaction: The Impact of Race, Rights, and Taxes."

Last fall, HP hired former Newsweek contributing editor/former New York Times reporter Melinda Henneberger.

Material from HP -- which turns two on May 9 -- is syndicated by Tribune Media Services. TMS also distributes Arianna Huffington's weekly newspaper column.
