Hurriyet Goes to Goss to Extend Presses

By: E&P Staff The Hurriyet Gazetecilik ve Matbaacilik subsidiary of Istanbul's Dogan Yayin Holding placed a large order with Goss International to increase color capacity and flexibility at three of its six printing sites across Turkey. The company already has more than 350 Goss press units installed.

The equipment ordered includes 15 Goss Universal four-high towers and one Goss Community four-high tower.

Hurriyet has a 41% market share of Turkey's newspaper advertising. Total circulation of the group's titles can reach up to 3.2 million copies on weekends.

Dogan Printing Centers General Manger Hamil Alniacik said that with a wide array of newspapers and commercial titles, "fast job changeovers and short make-ready times make our production schedule possible, without losing our edge on the latest news."

The expansion involves phased installations across the facilities. Initially, a 16-cylinder Community four-high tower will be added to the Trabzon facility's Community press, with commissioning scheduled for August.

Next will be a large extension of the Universal 45 press in Ankara, where Goss will install a seven more four-high towers, turner bars, and six reelstands. The existing three presses will be configured for four-folder operation. The four-highs will feature Goss Level 2 controls. Six of the towers will print 4x4 color and one will be dedicated for printing single-color webs. To be commissioned by end of next March, the additional towers will create one of the longest press lines in the world, exceeding 341 feet.

In the last phase, the Izmir plant will install eight more four-high towers, two two-high towers, and eight reelstands. With the same web width, cut-off, and press controls as those at Ankara, the new towers for Izmir are slated for commissioning by the end of June 2006.
