"I have no regrets’: Ottawa Valley newsman reflects on 50 years in the industry

Looking back on 50 years in the newspaper industry, Jeff Maguire says he doesn’t have a single regret.

The longtime Carleton Place resident marked a milestone half-century in the business this fall. It was during his childhood in Stittsville, where Maguire got bitten by the news bug. His late father, Howard, founded the Stittsville News community paper in 1957, operating a paper and commercial printing business with brother Lloyd until 1972.

“I have always liked to follow the news, but my dad was also a volunteer firefighter, which contributed to it,” he noted. “I had so much fun with my dad and uncle when they were running the paper.”

He knew immediately he wanted to pursue journalism as a career and honed his craft at Ottawa’s Algonquin College, graduating in 1971.

“I was always one of those people who always knew what they wanted to do. It was easy for me,” he said.
