By: E&P Staff A delegation of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) headed by its new president, Diana Daniels, is going to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) Wednesday to press for more progress in the unpunished murder of Colombian journalist Nelson Carvajal.
Daniels, the vice president and general counsel of the Washington Post Co., and Ricardo Trotti, IAPA's press freedom director, are scheduled to meet with Colombian government officials at IACHR headquarters in Washington during its current 123rd ordinary session.
Carvajal, a radio journalist who specialized in exposes of local government corruption, was killed April 16, 1998 in Pitalito, in Colombia's eastern Huila province. An IAPA Rapid Response Unit, investigative journalists dispatched to report on murders of journalists, submitted its findings to the IACHR in June 2001, and has since then taken a number of actions to keep the case moving forward.
During the IACHR session, the IAPA delegation will also submit its findings on another murder case, the Aug. 16, 2001 killing of Brazilian journalist M?rio de Almeida Coelho Filho, executive editor of the newspaper A Verdade in the Rio de Janeiro state. IAPA's Rapid Response Unit concluded the journalist was killed for having exposed misappropriation of public funds.
IAPA launched its Unpunished Crimes Against Journalists project in 1995. Its Rapid Response Unit has investigated 57 murder cases in 11 nations. It has submitted 18 of the cases to the IACHR, which so far has accepted 10 for further investigation.
Information about the investigations is available at the IAPA-run Web site
