IAPA Will Visit Rare Journalist Jailed in USA: Judith Miller

Posted
By: E&P Staff Miami-based Inter American Press Association (IAPA) frequently sends members on missions to investigate abuses against journalists in Latin America. Friday, IAPA's top leadership said it would be sending a mission closer to home: the United States.

IAPA said it would send a mission in the next few days to the Detention Center in Arlington, Virginia, "to show its solidarity" with Judith Miller, the New York Times reporter who has been jailed at the center since July 6 for refusing to testify about a source in the Valerie Plame investigation. The delegation will also visit Congress to discuss the proposed federal reporters shield law, IAPA said.

This is not the first time IAPA officials have visited a U.S. journalist jailed in contempt for refusing to reveal a source. In 2001, a delegation made a trip to the Houston jail where freelance author Vanessa Leggett was held for several weeks for refusing to discuss confidential sources she developed during reporting on a celebrated local murder case.
