Idab Wamac in Second HQP Mailroom

Posted
By: E&P Staff Idab Wamac, a Swedish subsidiary of Germany's Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, will supply post-press technology to Harmsworth Quays Printing's new plant, now under construction in Didcot, outside Oxford, England (E&P Online, August 17, 2005).

HQP Managing Director John Bird said in a statement that Idab Wamac equipment already had "demonstrated its ability to help maximize production output" from presses in HQP's existing plant in London's Docklands.

The order for Didcot consists of: four PCC 903 single-copy gripper conveyors, "designed for gentle handling ... at high speed" using a wide gripper to put less pressure on individual copies (especially suited to HQP's high color paginations); 12 stacking lines, including the TS 800 stacker with bundle catching and pressing device and rotary pusher for efficient bundling, under-wrapping and in-line strapping; four dispatch conveyor systems to connect packaging lines to four palletizers. (All bundles go to distribution centers on pallets.)

A subsidiary of Associated Newspapers Ltd., HQP prints the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, Evening Standard, and Metro, as well as supplements for ANL titles. The new plant will print approximately a million copies per day.

HQP's flexo printing puts a higher demand on finishing equipment, as the surface is dryer and glossier than offset-printed copies, according to Idab Wamac. HQP invested three years ago in Idab Wamac equipment at its plant in Surrey Quays, London. Based on performance comparison and cost of ownership, it again chose Idab Wamac.
