By: E&P Staff Online registration to compete for membership in the 2010-2012 IFRA International Newspaper Color Quality Club begins in May.
New in this competition will be the opportunity to produce test prints at the beginning of the year, when competitors may have more time.
To reduce the time between test print production and results announcement, a new plan calls for online registration to run from May through December 2009; production of monthly test prints and submission between January and April 2010; final evaluation and announcement of new members in June 2010; and presentation of winners during IFRA Expo in October 2010.
Newspapers that register by the October 16 can take part in a free test run with evaluation report to detect possible need to optimize print production in time for the competition.
Changed competition rules reduce participants' time and effort, without detracting from the test results' informational value. It is no longer only a one-time result that will be evaluated, but instead the consistency of print quality over a four-month period. Intermediate reports will inform participants about their progress.
A new test element that resembles a color ad and is as wide as a standard text column can be incorporated into the regular issue without appearing out of place, making the test more practice-oriented and simpler to carry out.
Also, creation of additional categories opens the competition to newspapers that work with heatset or UV or that are printed by a process other than coldset-offset and, instead of newsprint, for example, use SC, LWC or pink-tinted paper.
Furthermore, membership no longer will be limited to 50 newspapers. It is not the 50 newspapers with the highest number of points that are the winners, but all that show they can produce within the tolerances specified by the ISO 12647-3 newspaper printing standard and that present good overall print quality.
