The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) reported that its 2010 IFRA Expo in Hamburg, Germany, drew 10,000 visitors - a 50% increase over last year's expo in Vienna. They traveled from 80 countries to attend a show shortened by one day, Oct. 4-6.

WAN-IFRA CEO Christoph Riess attributed the big boost in attendance to "interest in new opportunities for the publishing industry brought about by both digital media and by the technological advances that allow for new creativity in the print product." he said. In particular, Riess cited apps for tablets and smart phones and developments in automating print production.

The 40th annual event included 341 exhibitors from 33 countries, an increase of more than 20% from last year.

WAN-IFRA presented the winners of the fifth annual XMA Cross Media Awards at the exhibition, with the focus in 2010 on local markets.

With the expo were an advertising summit, tablet and e-reading conference, and focus sessions on newspaper production. For the first time, the World Editors Forum joined the expo, convening on its last day, with a record of almost 600 editors from 86 countries.

Similarly, next year's expo, in Vienna, Oct. 10-12, will be followed for the first time by the World Newspaper Congress, along with the World Editors Forum and Info Services Expo 2011.
