Ifra Expo Seminar Explores News Exchange Standards

Posted
By: Meg Campbell A new set of news exchange standards may offer a way for newspapers to improve the way they share digital content and at the same time cut costs. The new standards will be the topic of an International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) information session at IFRA Expo next month in Amsterdam.

The three-hour seminar will explore the use of G2 standards?the IPTC?s newest set of news exchange standards?as a way of simplifying the transfer of news content among organizations and handling the growing volume of digital text, photos and videos.

The IPTC has developed the new G2 standards using the latest XML techniques in order to provide a more efficient way to combine news content and its metadata labels, according to an IFRA release.

?This won't be an abstract technical discussion of theoretical future developments. IPTC G2 standards are in use today, and the speakers will talk about real-world applications and concrete ways that the news industry can use IPTC G2 standards to save development time and resources."

The IPTC, based in London, UK, is a consortium of the world's major news agencies, news publishers and news industry vendors. It develops and maintains technical standards for improved news exchange that are used by news organisations around the world.
