By: Mark Fitzgerald Former Houston Post Publisher Ike Massey has bought the twice-weekly Burleson (Texas) Star and the five nearby weeklies in the Star Group from Susan Hutson and James Moody.
Dallas-based newspaper mergers and acquisitions firm Rickenbacher Media represented the seller in the transaction. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Texas native Massey is a longtime industry veteran who has been a group publisher for several MediaNews Group clusters and from 1991 to 1995 was president and publisher of the Houston Post. He later served as publisher of the Los Angeles Daily News. In 2003 he resigned as vice chairman of Plano, Texas-based DFW Community Newspapers.
The Star Group papers serve communities south of Fort Worth, and include the Crowley Star; Joshua Star; Keene Star; Alvarado Star; and South Tarrant Star.
Susan Hutson and her late husband Wayne founded the Burleson Star in 1965.
