In a First, AP Asking Readers to Direct Coverage of Sotomayor Hearings

Posted
By: E&P Staff When Sonia Sotomayor begins her confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings next Monday, The Associated Press will provide blog and Twitter feeds that will appear on Yahoo News -- and ask readers how they want the agency to cover the hearings.

AP_Courtside is the wire's Twitter feed for the hearings, and is already taking suggestions from readers. As Ian Crouch reports on the Nieman Journalism Lab Web site Friday, AP has been pitching reader involvement for some days now.

"AP_Courtside: Beginning July 13, AP will go behind the scenes of the #Sotomayor Supreme Court confirmation hearings. Will you be our assignment editor?" one tweet read.

Jim Kennedy, AP's vice president and director of strategic planning, told Crouch the experiment aims to find out if the agency can function both as a wire for its traditional customers, and an interactive news service.

"This all stems back to a larger project that we're working on to open up our coverage and engage users," Kennedy said. "We are looking to do things beyond writing stories, taking pictures, and shooting video. This big question here is: can a news agency have these kind of interactions even as it supplies content to our customers?"

Kennedy said Twitter will not be used to break news, but to point to its blog and news stories, as well as stories of member newspapers: "We may use the blog to write about things that won't make it into our other stories, but we're not using either platform to scoop ourselves."

This story has been clarified to reflect the Twitter and blog feeds will appear on Yahoo News and will also point to stories from member newspapers.
