In Chicago Suburbs, 'News Sun' Becomes Tabloid Morning Paper

Posted
By: E&P Staff In one fell swoop, The News Sun in the Chicago suburb of Waukegan, Ill., has converted from a broadsheet to a tabloid, and from an evening paper to a morning daily.

"No daily newspaper I know has ever changed quite so fundamentally in one grand sweep as we will change," Editor and Publisher David Rutter said in a note introducing the new format. "This will not be a superficial facelift."

With the conversion, which took effect July 24, the paper is delivered to homes before 6:30 a.m., and is at local commuter rail stations by 6 a.m.

Rutter said readers "have grumbled for years -- with good reason -- that getting their local newspaper at noon or later was a lot less useful in their lives than they'd prefer. Frankly, it's a testament to reader loyalty that our customers stuck with us."

The tabloid, or compact format as the News Sun prefers to call it, has 64 pages a day, and is designed for "layering" of stories with short pieces that are designed to give context and background to stories.

The coverage will continue to emphasize local news of Lake County, Ill., Rutter told readers, "and we're going to do even more of it."
