By: E&P Staff The Gazette of Colorado Springs, Colo., plans to include customized Bibles with all copies of its home-delivered newspapers this Sunday, a staffer confirmed to E&P Friday afternoon.
The International Bible Society is paying the Gazette $36,000 to distribute the New Testament copies to the paper's 91,000 subscribers and run a full-page ad on Sunday, according CSIndy.com., the weekly Colorado Springs Independent's Web site.
CSIndy.com reported that some congregants at Temple Shalom, the city's largest Jewish congregation, might cancel their subscriptions in protest.
The Gazette's editor, director of marketing, and other executives could not be immediately reached for comment.
Colorado Springs is the first city in which the International Bible Society plans to distribute the New Testament inside daily newspapers, according to the Independent's report. The group claims it is already in discussions with The Denver Post and has targeted Seattle, Nashville, and Santa Rosa, Calif.
According to the weekly, the only mention in the Gazette was a note in the newspaper on Oct. 16 from publisher Bob Burdick comparing the plan to giving out laundry detergent and America Online disks. "Just because we distribute something doesn't mean we endorse it or don't endorse it," said Burdick.
