By: (AP) A columnist for The Fayetteville Observer has been suspended from his job for one week for failing to properly attribute material appearing in his columns, the newspaper said.
A story in Wednesday's editions said on five occasions since Feb. 1, information from other sources was published in such a way that it appeared to be reported and written by columnist Jim Pettit.
Four of the items appeared in Outdoors columns, the fifth in a Local & State column, the newspaper said. All of the information published was accurate and provided to the newspaper for its use, but the newspaper said it should have been attributed to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the Outdoor Wire, BassFan.com, and Reuters news service.
Executive editor Brian Tolley said the newpaper is re-examining its professional practices to ensure there are no future incidents.
