In the New Year: Masthead Change at 'The New York Times'

Posted
By: E&P Staff The New York Times unveiled a new masthead configuration on its editorial page this morning, in an effort "to emphasize the separate control of news coverage and editorial opinions at the paper."

The masthead now breaks the top executives into "The News Section," "The Opinion Pages" and "The Business Management."
Each group, the paper explained in an Editors' Note, continues to report separately to the publisher, Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., whose name remains at the top of the masthead.

The note concluded: "In making the change, The Times is responding to questions from readers, over the years, about the editors' responsibilities and the danger of overlap between news and opinion rules. Like the creation of the public editor's position a year ago, the masthead redesign symbolizes a continuing effort to make the newspaper more accountable to readers and its processes more understandable."
