The Independent-Mail was honored for overall cooperation, earned for providing the international news cooperative with stories and photographs from its circulation area. Of particular help was the newspaper's work sharing photos and information during the April 2008 slayings of an Easley family, allegedly by their son.

Austin went above and beyond the call during a breaking news story on Hilton Head Island by ensuring the AP and its members around the world receive timely information about the case of a missing couple.
