By: E&P Staff When Danny Boyle?s ?Slumdog Millionaire? won the Oscar for best picture last night, Universal Press Syndicate columnist Saritha Prabhu was pulling for it, even though it's been a thorn of controversy in some parts of the Indian community.
Columnist Prabhu, who writes a weekly column in The Tennessean in Nashville, is a native Indian who wrote in a recent column that she was shocked by her fellow countrymen?s feelings that the movie?s direct look at poverty damages India?s international reputation.
??Slumdog? doesn't sugarcoat. It squarely shows what exists in parts of India's teeming cities: slums, child labor, child beggars, child maiming, poor, young females forced into prostitution, police brutality, religious violence,? Prabhu wrote.
