(AP) An Indiana University alum who worked for years at a Lafayette newspaper before he died in 2008 has left $1 million to IU's School of Journalism.

IU says the gift from Frank Arganbright was the first single donation of at least $1 million for scholarships from an individual in the history of the journalism school.

Arganbright earned a bachelor's degree in journalism at IU in 1949 and worked for years at the Lafayette Journal and Courier newspaper. He later worked for Purdue University's office of public information. He died in 2008 at age 88.

Dean Brad Hamm said Arganbright had been a regular supporter of the journalism school but some were surprised by the size of his estate gift. Hamm says the money will encourage public affairs reporting.
