'Indianapolis Star' Cuts 52 Jobs, Closes 2 Weeklies

By: The Indianapolis Star Media Group, which includes the state's largest newspaper, has cut 52 jobs as part of a nationwide staff reduction by parent Gannett Co. in response to declining revenues and an industrywide slump.

The moves, announced Wednesday, included 20 newsroom cuts at The Indianapolis Star, or about 7 percent of its news staff.

The group also will close two weekly community newspapers, the East Side Herald and the Spotlight, on Jan. 15. Ten positions will be eliminated as a result.

President and Publisher Michael G. Kane said the company was considering other changes, including how it sections the paper and packages classified ads.

This week's layoffs are the second round at the Star since August and come as newspapers across the country have been slashing staff.

Gannett, which publishes 85 daily newspapers and nearly 900 non-daily publications, eliminated more than 1,000 jobs in August and said in October it would cut another 10 percent, or an estimated 3,000 jobs, in this latest round.
